About This Website

In July 2006, the new ACGME Program Requirements for Residency Education in Family Medicine went into effect. Within these requirements are new areas of focus in reproductive health. These topics are Abuse and Family Violence, Contraception and Options Counseling for Unintended Pregnancy.

In response to these changes and with a grant from the Ford Foundation, Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health (PRCH) brought together individual and organizational leaders in Family Medicine to strategize around providing tools and information to help residency programs meet the new requirements. As a result of this process, PRCH distributed a request for proposals from Family Medicine residency programs that utilize innovative, comprehensive, evidence-based and effective residency education strategies in one of the three new areas.

The request received many responses that were rigorously scored by Family Medicine leaders, and model practices were selected in Options Counseling for Unintended Pregnancy and Contraception. Although there were many innovative ideas submitted for Abuse and Family Violence, no single program met all of the RFP standards. In response to this, PRCH convened leaders in this area to develop a model which is presented in this site.
