Weekly session in integrated abortion clinic with termination training

Evidence-based exam template intervention

Evidence-based exam template intervention is pending as part of a new EMR being introduced at our clinic. Separate pop-up message is not an available feature with this program. Template includes prompts to discuss birth control, use of folate, safer sex and emergency contraception. Plan to add a more detailed birth control/family planning section to the adolescent patient template already in use.

Planned: Annual in-service on Emergency Contraception and availability of handouts

This in-service will discus the mechanism of action and safety protocol of emergency contraception, with the intent of increasing provider comfort with prescribing and calling in refills of emergency contraception for patients. Handouts will be on the residency’s provider website for access and distribution. Inservice is scheduled for December, 2006. Handouts have been identified and their addition to the residency website (which is being redesigned) is pending.

Electronic procedure log maintained by residents

This is verified by supervising attendings and is reviewed at each resident’s biannual evaluation meetings. Women’s health procedures to be logged include: amniotomy, C-birth, cervical biopsy, circumcision, colposcopy, continuity delivery, D and C, ECC, endometrial biopsy, episiotomy, IUD placement, IUPC placement, neonatal resuscitation, pelvic exam with PAP/GC/chl, vaginal repair (nd degree) and vulvar biopsy. Please note that some of these procedures are performed during the gynecology rotation while others are performed during the OB rotations and continuity clinic.

Evaluation of curricula by residents

Evaluation of curricula by residents: residents evaluate gynecology and contraceptive rotations.

Pre- and post-intervention chart review survey

Please contact program for more information.

Compile data regarding number of contraception counseling visits

Pre- and post-intervention survey with patients: Assess the frequency of documented contraceptive counseling at visits with female patients between the ages of 16 and 45. We have collected data on the frequency of documented contraceptive (and emergency contraception) counseling from 100 patient charts of female patients of reproductive age (18-45) over the past year. We will collect comparable post-intervention data after our EMR template has been instituted.
