Evaluation methodologies for individual resident competencies and to evaluate programmatic outcomes

Summary

Detail

Students evaluate the rotation

Students evaluate the rotation using the standard evaluation used for all elective rotations in Family Medicine.
(Evaluation: Pre-Rotation Survey, Post-Rotation Survey)

Each resident is evaluated using a standardized form for communication

Each resident is evaluated using a standardized form for communication, counseling skills, clinical management skills and procedure skills by all core faculty working with them during their month on the rotation. This is done on a computer, online system institution wide so that data can be collected and tracked over time. (Evaluation: Evaluation of Residents)

Formal self-reflection session

Formal self-reflection session in which one core faculty member meets with resident, reviews the experience with her or him and asks a series of open-ended questions

  • Questions are drawn from a model developed by Dr. Rachel Remen

Begun working with RHEDI

Begin working with RHEDI—the Center for Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine—to develop standardized evaluation materials based upon the ANSIRH Early Abortion Training Workbook

Publications in peer review journals and at national conferences

Publications in peer review journals and at national conferences:

  • First publication, published in February 2005 in Contraception, was a case study of an introduction of medical abortion into a university medical center
(Article: "You can’t do that ‘round here")
  • Second paper will focus on reproductive decisions made by women seeking options counseling in residency practices that offer onsite prenatal care and medical abortion
  • Third article will focus on evaluation of the training model with respect to the perception of trainee and preceptors regarding the attainment of competency in the provision of options counseling, medication abortion and uterine aspiration

Developed an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination)

Developed an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) to determine the resident’s ability to communicate information and counsel patients in the areas of contraception and family planning (Curriculum: OSCE)
